The United Defensive Front ("UDF") was an alliance on CivClassic between Icenia, Yoahtl, Columbia, Imperial Truidence, Southshire, and Acadia. It was founded in the wake of the collapse of the First UNC on July 16th, 2019 and built on the five pillars of self determination, neutrality, free trade, mutual defense, and shared infrastructure.

The name United Defensive Front and much of its original charter were proposed by ChrisChrispie and Truck_Man1234, and much of the original charter was written by Icenians. After the addition of Columbia in fall 2019, the charter was heavily revised, with definitions added for the eventual addition of associate members, and changing the way directives are approved within the alliance.

In March of 2020, original member Bloom left the UDF due to war weariness and Columbian distrust of their commitment to the UDF's war effort against NATO. Soon after, Southshire joined. After the conclusion of the Infinity War, SPQR would vote to join the alliance. In February 2021, Southshire was transitioned to an associate member as its activity waned.

On August 14, 2021, Acadia was admitted to the UDF as an associate member. Shortly after, SPQR left the UDF in October 2021 when it voted to be annexed by Varkonia as a member state.

Positions and Structure

Security Council

The UDF Security Council (colloquially the "Synergy Council") was the alliance's highest deliberative body. It was composed of the heads of state of each full member nation, as well as no more than two appointed representatives from each full member nation. Additionally, the Alliance Spokesperson and the Strategic Commander retained permanent seats on the Security Council. In early 2021, at the direction of Spokesperson Enforcer15, the Security Council adopted six-sigma process improvement principles. Each Security Council member endeavored to embody at least one of the six sigmas: teamwork, insight, brutality, male enhancement, handshakefulness, and play hard) in order to achieve the UDF's dynamic and ever-evolving key performance initiatives.

Spokesperson

The Spokesperson was tasked with representing the UDF’s interests to nations outside the alliance, as well as facilitating clear communication between member states. They were elected by the member heads of state, and served until resignation or impeachment. Enforcer15 (Enforcer#5810) was the last and longest-serving spokesperson.

Strategic Commander

The strategic Commander was tasked with coordinating military and infrastructure projects between nations. They were also capable of commanding a defense if necessary. SoundTech served as the UDF's original and only Strategic Commander, from the founding of the alliance in July 2019 until the conclusion of CivClassic.

Foreign Relations Policy

Having been founded on a pillar of neutrality, the UDF aimed to stay as neutral as possible to all non-member nations and alliances, and provided its member states broad individual latitude to dictate their own foreign relations.

Incident Summary

Hostile Intentions 70

In July 2019, latent distrust between Varkonia and UDF member states Bloom and Icenia led to an incident where the UDF incorrectly accused the Entente and Mir of intending to alt-raid and eventually attack the UDF. This accusation was based on fake screenshots, which were collated and posted to the /r/Civclassics subreddit under the title "Hostile Intentions 70". After the screenshots were exposed as fake, then-spokesperson V3ndetta formally apologized to Mir & Varkonia and tensions were defused.

LSD Tensions and Removal of the JQ

In August 2019, players Figasaur and Cr0codile, formerly a part of the "The Jewish Quarter" in Mount Augusta built a Chick Fil-A in Icenia City, overlapping a skybunker hole in the city center. When Figasaur and Cr0codile were ordered to demolish the chicken franchise, sympathetic players from the LSD, among others who disliked Icenia, descended on Icenia City to protest the Chic-Fil-A's removal, iron-reinforcing the structure and patrolling the city in military kit. Threats by the JQ and others to Obbybomb, coup, and raid Icenia and associated UDF countries prompted the UDF to initiate round-the-clock defensive patrols. The UDF decided to maintain its defensive readiness for a large-scale attack, so it could mount a defense if necessary and garner international support. However, an LSD attack never came.

Eventually, after they lost international allies, the Jewish Quarter was removed by President ChrisChrispie, among others, and Figasaur and Cr0codile became internationally wanted criminals.

Augustan Federation Iceroad Dispute

In August 2021, tensions rose between the UDF and the Augustan Federation over the status of a UDF iceroad passing under the unfinished AF vault and the city of Mt. September. The iceroad was constructed during the 2019 War of the Coalition by Yoahtlan and Icenian personnel, and integrated into the UDF's 3-wide, fully obsidian ice road highway network, which spanned nearly the entire north-south distance of the map between Columbia and Yoahtl. Members of Mt. September discovered the iceroad during construction of the AF vault and associated bunkers, and sought its removal on the grounds that it did not have a right to pass under MtS claims. In response, bgbba, ChrisChrispie and WackyAki assembled a team of UDF members to reinforce the ice road, culminating in a standoff between UDF forces and AF member NebulaSSR. The incident concluded with the removal and rerouting of the iceroad under the AF Vault, AF snitching of the portion of iceroad the extended under Mt. September, and later minemaster933 obby-bombing portions of the iceroad on his own ideological grounds.

Dummonia Land Dispute and Snitch Grid Exposure

In October 2021, a land dispute between Yoahtl and former Yoahtlan okx over territory in Wayrest swamp in the near (-,+) culminated in small-scale fighting between okx, the sole member of the breakaway nation "Dummonia", and various UDF conscripts forced to fight in the swamps by GDAN12. Multiple UDF conscripts were pearled over the multi-day skirmishes, including the unprecedented three-time pearling of GDAN12 over a two day period. Spokesperson Enforcer15 attempted back-room negotiations between okx and the Yoahtlan government, but a peace deal was never reached. Eventually, okx was apprehended, at which point he released a dump of UDF snitch locations, which he had cached from his time as a UDF Security Council member. These snitches were visualized by HuM4nB31nG, and revealed that the UDF had done no "illegal snitching" outside its own borders. While an information security blunder, the revelation of snitch locations did not affect UDF security policy as redundant snitches were added immediately following the release. Following this betrayal of trust, okx was sentenced to one year of pearl imprisonment by Yoahtl . He was released by CivClassic administration during the closure of CivClassic, as administration granted pearl amnesty to previously-imprisoned players to explore the map in the leadup to the server's closure.

War

War of the Coalition

In December of 2019 Icenia City, along with several other non-UDF territories, was obby bombed by a rouge nation on the border of the HJE and SPQR called Ransakistan. The UDF played an instrumental role in the coalition that formed in the immediate aftermath of the bombings, with Icenia becoming a major base of operations for retaking the Lusitan Line. Although the UDF lost one pearl in combat (ChrisChrispie), the Coalition still managed to totally disable the Ransakistani Vault within two weeks of its discovery.

Entry into the Infinity War

Despite the UDF's desire for neutrality and expansion after the War of the Coalition, it began participation in the Infinity War after the discovery that NATO welcomed many escaped Ransakistani obby bombers back into their ranks rather than turning over their pearls. As a direct result of this, member states of the UDF, most notably Columbia, independently sent manpower to the Pinkerton Vault Break. After NATO discovered this, the UDF voted to officially enter into the Infinity War and proceeded to participate in the conquest of Corvus later in February alongside Entente and Mir. Susbequently the UDF settled into a long siege defense in the Columbian city of Valyria where NATO forces attempted to break Columbia's vault, The Crucible. During this siege, the cities of Rotterdam, Polska, and Valyria were heavily damaged and the region became a wasteland. NATO forces occupied Polska until a skybridge was built into the territory and traps were disabled. In the summer of 2020, the UDF accounted for a plurality of the manpower at the breaking of Hallow's vault alongside Mirian, Entente, and SATO forces. The UDF would ultimately see the war to its bitter end when, almost exactly one year after its founding, it cooperated in the break of Best Western, Vault 76, "Litterbox Vault" over a 36-hour period, thus ending the war.
