The Acadian G/J Civil War was a brief but heated online cultural conflict between two opposed cultural sub-factions within Acadia with foreign combatants discord-pvp´ing on both sides of the schism. The conflict was fought between those supporting g-posting, the Traditionalists, and those supporting j-posting, the Imperials. Sneed was also there. This conflict mostly played out on the Acadian discord server on October 5th, 2021, the Day of Madness, however, the conflict had been brewing for some time before and is likely to continue in some form in the future if not through a full repeat.

Origin of the Conflict

Acadia has since its conception been a culturally rich but diverse nation, deeply influenced by earlier nations; most notably Adina, Moloka, and Javaya on one hand, and Norlund on the other hand. For many Acadians, their Acadian identity is tied to the cultures of the aforementioned nations, and the Tahar language and the Indoja religion (in Acadia established as Ashahara) have since the nation´s inception played a central role in Acadia´s national identity. However, when Acadia moved from CivUniverse to CivClassics in early 2021, it was inevitable that given enough time Acadia´s cultural fabric would eventually see new influences from different cultures.

The 9th of July was a historic day for Acadia, as Columbia built an embassy in New Turing, Acadia´s first hosting embassy, featuring a kickback trap to help catch the altraiders Druid and JayTeeR who had been plaguing Acadia and Fish with their raids amidst a larger wave of raids in Acadia. Next to their embassy the Columbians had build a G made out of unreinforced dirt blocks, a symbol of their devotion to g-posting. This was the moment when the tradition of g was first introduced to Acadia. The dirt G remained untouched for many weeks until it eventually was removed to make space for urban development. However, while the G was easily removed, it would not be as easily forgotten.

On August 18 Acadian citizen Tomattan asked then Prime Minister Bloof to create a g-posting channel ´´...or something´´ on Acadia´s discord server, which was promptly provided. The channel proved a great succes with many g´s posted immediately after its creation, by many different Acadians as well as foreigners joining in on the fun. However, not long after, resistance to this cultural import began to mount and some people began to post other letters and strange symbols, griefing the wholesome devotion of the channel. Kannon himself, at the time just a citizen of Acadia, posted the first j, also the first anti-g character posted in the channel, marking the beginning of the cultural divide. The opposition to g continued from that day on, though in the next few weeks it initially lost much of its fervor. During this time however, j succesfully managed to establish itself as the leading opponent of g.

The 27th of September saw a prelude to the Day of Madness, when multiple Acadians started a sudden revival of j-posting to tease Tomattan in the Acadian g-posting channel, as well as the g-posting channel in the UDF discord later on. This was also the day the first Sneed was posted in the Acadian g-posting channel, by Troll Bebek. There was strong resistance from the Traditionalists, answering each j and other character with pearl emoji´s and more g´s. Kannon was declared meme-pos in Sussex and Emperor Ch1pR decided to support g-posting. Bloof, herself a Traditionalist, eventually managed to calm Acadia down. But this was not to last.

The Day of Madness

Shortly before the Day of Madness Kannon had been elected the new Prime Minister of Acadia, receiving permissions for the Acadian Discord. Then, on October 5th, the Acadian discord was quickly brought into civil disorder when Kannon decided to tease Tomattan again, publicly asking ´´How much should I piss off @Tomattan´´ and promptly changing the name of the g-posting channel from ´´g´´ to ´´j´´, occasionally also changing Traditionalists´ nicknames for them to include the letter j. The Traditionalists fought back, but were quickly given ´G Rebel´ by Kannon roles whilst the Reformists were given ´J Imperial´ roles, after which some Traditionalists were banned from posting in the channel.

The Traditionalists resisted and a plea was made to Columbia for help, which brought a few Columbians to Acadia´s discord to help fight for g, most notably of which Asuramaru. Immediately afterwards, Kannon privately reached out to Seekinq, the Emperor of Fish, to ask for his support, falsely claiming that the Traditionalists would eventually move to repress Fish´s count-to-fish tradition. Seekinq however, initially somewhat impartial to the g/j conflict as a staunch fish/melon-devotee, soon informed Tomattan, who, as Kannon probably did not realize, holds the ceremonial title of King of Fish. More foreign support for g arrived from Emperor Ch1pR of Sussex, former Lambatan President Kaprediem, and former Mythrilian Duke Pandastical, and more, while j received support from Nebula, and to lesser extents from Yoahtlan Alcuahtl WackyAki and Druid, and others. In the meantime Troll Bebek continued to post Sneed.

Due to the intensity of the conflict Kannon and Tomattan began to approach eachother for peace talks, after which a dedicated peace-negotations-channel was opened. Kannon, and Tomattan and Asu could quickly agree upon a few basic demands; most notably 1) the full restoration of the g-posting channel and establishment of a new, seperate j-posting channel; 2) an apology from Kannon for his actions; and 3) equal recognition for Asu´s catgirl religion. However, peace talks temporarly broke down when Kannon introduced the demand that Tomattan should say ´j´ at least once before a treaty could be signed. Acadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Spleef, liked and respected by both sides, was then brought in as mediator in order to find a way to establish peace - but this quickly fell through when Spleef simply stated ´´we must unite´´ to Kannon after which Kannon withdrawed his support for Spleef as mediator. Spleef responded by posting ´´f´´ after which Flags intervened to unite both sides against Spleef, while Nebula unsuccessfully proposed a compromise of ´gj´.

Final negotiations appeared after Troll Bebek posted his demand of group transfers until the election of a pro-Sneed Prime Minister, in which both parties agreed to the earlier established three demands. However, only a few hours later, JuniorTide returned to the Acadia discord to simply delete the j-posting channel which was met with zero resistance.

Aftermath

The following day still saw some j-posting in the g-posting channel from those who had not yet processed the loss of their side of the schism, but most people had moved on and the Acadian Discord saw normality slowly return. Given that the conflict ended in a clear but not total Traditionalist victory the possibility of a Reformist resurgence remains. Nevertheless, it is clear that through this conflict, both g-posting and j-posting have entrenched themselves as established aspects of Acadian culture, revealing a divide in Acadia over its cultural path going forwards and the cultural influences from its close allies on Civclassics.
