A shard is essentially a mini-world, breaking a full size map into different servers to reduce server load as well as have more space for the server.
Sharding was first used for Civcraft 3.0, but also much later on other servers such as CivRealms and Devoted Hell.
CivMC's staff have confirmed that sharding will come to their server after the servers constant long queue wait times.
