Bergecraft was a series of Civ servers between 2014 and 2015[1] ran by berge403 and WildWeazel that called itself the "Unofficial Civcraft R&D Lab" where they could try ideas that "probably won't be covered by the official server".[2] The goal was to introduce and prove ideas which if successful could then be adopted into future Civcraft iterations and servers. Bergecraft adopted a model of short planned iterations based on the rapid prototyping paradigm, so that controversial or breaking changes could be introduced without committing to them long-term.[3] The server ran only 3 such iterations from March 2014 to January 2015 before shutting down due to inactivity.[4]

Iterations

Bergecraft 1

"Alluring Arwen"[5] lasted a month between the 1st of March to the 1st of April 2014. This was the baseline configuration similar to Civcraft 1.0 with default terrain, and introducing Extra Hard Mode for an additional challenge and realism.

Bergecraft 2

"Brawny Beren"[6] nominally lasted for 5 months between the 1st of April and the 10th of October 2014, though was only active through June. This iteration introduced a new PVP plugin intended to favor strength in numbers.

Bergecraft 3

"Cunning Celeborn" aka "Scare City"[7] lasted for almost 2 months between the 23rd of November 2014 and 14th of January 2015. This iteration notably featured a new very small custom map with rare localized ore veins. It also introduced a new plugin SmOres to customize ore and pick behavior, and FactoryMod which was required for smelting. The purpose of the iteration was to force scarcity of land and resources quickly to see how groups would respond.
