Wherever cultures develop, and wherever civilisations, factions and cities emerge, religions soon sprout. Whether it's because of ingame phenomena, such as the Glitchwood, or Ender Dragon, or because of IRL religions such as Islam or Christianity, or references to popular culture such as Dolan and Cthulhu, there are always prophets who claim to know the answer, a path to salvation, a prophecy. As such, there were always pious believers who followed them. Some griefers even "claim" to have inspiration from one of these religions, good or bad. (Mandy's later griefings being no exception)
