Discovering Civ-style Minecraft

Starting off

  • Start your journey in an existing nation because:
    • You can find people to teach you the civ mechanics
    • You get to use all the expensive infrastructure
    • Making contacts is very important, not just politically
    • It's more fun to play with like-minded people
    • List of Nations taking in new players
  • Join the global chat group: /nljg ! !
  • To get around, use boat or rail. here's a map to find boat routes: Web map
  • Respect existing nations: don't grief/raid them, they will get you back since they know the mechanics and their transport, production, and military infrastructures are more advanced than you might expect
  • Install basic mods
    • Minimap: set waypoints for your hidden things and other people's places, find travel routes
    • Gammabright: see in the dark
    • Civradar: see not just mobs and players but also items, minecarts, boats, and hear a sound when someone comes nearby
  • Spend your time mining diamonds and buy the stuff you need, it's cheaper this way since established players can produce things way cheaper than you on your own

Building up

  • Install advanced mods:
    • Skynet: know when someone logs on/off
    • ReplayMod: keep always running to have undeniable proof for surprises, or just go back in time/space
    • SnitchMaster: visualize Snitches' detection fields, manage large Snitch groups
    • Macromod: hotkeys, automation, botting
  • Set up your own Exp production, obby farm
  • Learn building secure structures

Oldfriend coming back

  • Install the mods
  • Get updated on the game mechanics
  • Use the new GUIs:
    • /fm to open a graphical overview of all factories and recipes
    • /nl to open a graphical overview of your Namelayer groups (used for chat and reinforcements)
    • /ja while standing inside the field of a Snitch to take a quick look through the logs of that snitch
    • /rein to see the available reinforcements and their strengths
