Goetia, known formally as the New Order of Goetia, is a spiritualist bureaucratic organisation that operates across the Nether on CivMC on behalf of Vinland (CivMC) and its allies. Headquartered at an undisclosed location and comprised of volunteers, Goetia indiscriminately enforces penitence and rehabilitation upon those who have been pearled for crimes within the Overworld by the allied nations of Impendia, often co-operating with Overworld nations in order to make amends between those who have been wronged, and those who have wronged others.

Etymology

The word “Goetia” comes from the Greek word γοητεία (goēteia), meaning “charm” or “witchcraft”. It is also derived from the name of the first book in the Lesser Key of Solomon called "Ars Goetia" that contains a list of 72 demons that can be summoned by a sorcerer. The book was first published in the 17th century and has been edited and translated by various authors, such as Aleister Crowley. Goetia takes this name in reference to its prevalent occult and esoteric themes, as well as being due to the fact that it is a nation that resides in the Nether (hell).

Ideology

Purification of the Nether

Goetia believes in the religious purification of the Nether. According to the Charter of Goetia, the ability that pearled players possess to disrupt infrastructure or pose a threat against both visitors or free inhabitants of the Nether is unacceptable, and contraband from the Overworld such as armour or weaponry must be taken and destroyed in order to prevent them from being used inappropriately. Goetia believes that those who have committed crimes in the Overworld must be stripped of their offensive agency in the Nether - free to build and live their lives as they see fit - but without the means of launching offensive measures against others. Contraband is defined by Arch Magister Metropolitan_ as "diamond or netherrite armour or weaponry, regardless of enchantment". Despite this, Goetia may allow the possession of such items provided that the pearled player in question operates within the bounds of Magisterial Esotericism, and that the Magisters of Goetia are absolutely certain that the items in question will not be used for offensive purposes.

Internment

Goetia provides system of rehabilitative justice known as "Internment". Internment is a system in which any Overworld nation (although primarily allied impendian nations) can sentence a pearled player who has committed crimes to perform tasks or gather materials within the Nether. The oversight of these players is given to the Magisters of Goetia, who provide the pearled players with basic tools, food and shelter in order to complete their tasks. Pearled players who have been sentenced to internment can only be freed when their terms have been completed. Breaking any of the seven rules of internment will result in the internment being terminated, and the offender in question being left in the Nether for a period of time no less than three times their preliminary sentence - or in other cases, indefinitely.

Political Neutrality

In order to prevent conflicts of interest, Goetia refrains from interfering in Overworld politics entirely, unless it conflicts with the interests of Vinland (CivMC). Because of this, Goetia offers it's systems of justice to all nations without objection - provided that the basic terms of internment and threshold of evidence have been met. Goetian officials turn a blind eye to those who have been pearled in controversial and heavily politically motivated wars due to perceived fact that guilt cannot be determined solely by being on the losing side. Despite this, it only acts on behalf o

Politics

The New Order of Goetia is governed by the Magisters of Goetia. The Magisters are organised into three groups.

  • Arch Magister - The Arch Magister is the divine ruler of the New Order of Goetia, and has the final say on matters not defined within the Charter of Goetia.
  • High Magisters - High Magisters are given large amounts of agency within Goetia, acting as the overseers for internment processes as well as having significant political authority.
  • Magisters - Spiritual devotees of the way of rehabilitation and penitence. Magisters have a say on the Goetian Council, and have the responsibility to act in the interest of both the New Order of Goetia, as well as the Nether as a whole.
