Theory

In Marxism, communism is the final stage of historical materialism where all class contradictions have been resolved. Communism is defined almost universally as a stateless, egalitarian society. Many socialists on Civcraft believe in communism as play style or goal to be reached on Civcraft. Some state socialists advocate for a Communist government, or a socialist society ran by a Communist Party to reach an end goal of communism as Marx described. Libertarian socialists or libsocs advocate for the outright definition of communism with no transitional socialist stage and are opposed to any state or hierarchy.

History

Beginning on Civcraft 1.0, there was the LSIF. The LSIF is a Libertarian Socialist group dedicated to making communes and creating an egalitarian society in Civcraft. See LSIF.

nickyd614, a member of LSIF decided to leave and make a city called "Communa" with ZANETNT and personfrommars. Originally planned to be a part of an iron duping scheme, the city later evolved into a Communist city with a Marxist-Leninist state ideology.

Later, other groups were founded with a Communist ideology like Geckograd.

On Civcraft 2.0, the LSIF and the cities of Proletarskaya and Quito in the CSC are the two largest Communist groups, with the former being libertarian socialist and the latter being state socialist. Please move CSC to socialism

Politics

State Socialist Politics

Internal politics in state socialist socialist societies like the CSC may differ between Socialist cities. Typically state socialist cities have some form of elected officials and legislative process that requires discussion. Communist societies operate with a state on principles of democratic centralism.

Libertarian Socialist Politics:

Libertarian Socialist interpretations of Communist systems entail forms of anarchist organisation. This means that some communist communities in Civcraft like LSIF use one or more of these forms of political organisation:

Direct Democracy

Votes can be held in-game or in a subreddit, where all relevant parties vote in favour of or against a motion, where a majority's (the cut-off may differ per community) decision is passed. For example, the LSIF uses this system for most of its LSIF-wide issues in its subreddit.

Referral

Used as a manner of accepting new members into a community, referral is quite simply needing one or more referrals from existing members in order to become a member.

Consensus

Consensus entails a unanimous decision must be made before a motion is passed. Should this be impossible a compromise could be made, or the motion is dropped. Some early communes such as Black Cat Commune used this system.

Federalisation

Federalisation is used as a manner of large-scale implementation of decision-making. The early LSIF used this method extensively in its early days, through having individual communes and cities vote internally on international issues, and relaying the outcomes to the subreddit.

Representation

Although very rarely and carefully implemented, sometimes communist entities use forms of representation. Usually when this happens, positions are either symbolic or hold little enacting power, are always instantly recallable, and are usually tied to responsibilities that can realistically only be held by one person. For example, the Libertarian Socialist International Military (LSIM), which is the LSIF armed wing, votes for a commander just before an operation, based on merit and trust. The position is instantly recallable and expires when the operation is resolved.

Syndicalism and Committees

Sometimes communist societies in Civcraft create committees based on geographical, societal or economic (such as Syndicalism) situations for organisational reasons. For example Chiapas has a Housing Committee which everyone who builds within the City borders automatically joins. This committee holds certain standards of architecture that must be adhered to. Any conflicts are resolved within this committee. Proudhonia is an LSIF city which operates partially through Guilds, based on economic specialities such as Potion-making, Farming and Grinder Maintenance.

Economics

Communist communities generally operate with an internal gift economy – having neither currency nor official trade between members. Shared, group-reinforced, communal chests are used for common items while more valuable items are kept in secure vaults or distributed in private, off-site caches.

In general, members are entitled to 100% of the fruits of their labor, and contribute surpluses to community chests voluntarily. Surpluses in those chests are then usable by all members, with democratic oversight occuring only for massive allocations. This model leads to rapid allocation between motivated producers and motivated builders.

Export and import occurs in the same manner between other communist cities.

Although not yet implemented in Civcraft, in theory labour note systems can be utilised as a form of currency reimbursement for labour within a communist system.

The Individual

Individual freedom is seen as an utmost goal of importance in most communist societies. In practice, all individuals are free to do whatever they like, as long as they do not infringe on the freedoms of others against their will. Communist communities do, however, oppose trade of all forms within their communes as it is seen as coercive to individual liberty. Some communes hold safe space policies, such as Valenti, which attempt to combat prejudicial language and behaviour.
