On 14 May 2017, King Cowguypig made a [https://www.reddit.com/r/CivCommonwealth/comments/6b5qyi/the_commonwealth_lives_join_us_on_civex_30/ post] on the subreddit calling for all players to join Commonwealth in CivEx 3.0. The town that resulted was a smaller town than former iterations, and they did not have a lot of political leverage or influence, it brought many of the former Concordia and old Commonwealth players back again.
As many civ players know, CivEx 3.0 died very quickly, and with the launch of CivClassic on 2 June, Commonwealth swiftly moved over, creating what would be Westminster and Strassburg (created by fadedsoul) on a small island and a mountain nearby, respectively.
Westminster quickly became infamous for their incomplete [https://imgur.com/a/vzDRa canals], at the time called trenches, and its extra security measures; many regarded it (and still do today) as a maze to navigate. Some were even inclined to [https://www.reddit.com/r/CivCommonwealth/comments/6p3r67/do_not_build_bridges_over_the_canals_do_not/ stop people from making bridges across these trenches] in favor of tunnels under the canals.
Soon after the move, many different settlements appeared near the capital and became settlements of the Commonwealth. One of the more notable ones was [[Southshire]], founded by Orinnari and StrPlatinum on 25 June 2017, roughly 800 blocks away on a peninsula in the south.

=== Prelude to the Somber War ===

It was the first major attack on the server thus far, and had become extremely devastating to the town. The altraids continued for many days thereafter. [https://www.reddit.com/r/CivCommonwealth/comments/6rq5zt/total_repayment_value_of_raiders/ Short sentences] were given to the raiders, as a false hope for being a future threat to the raiders.
On 13 August, [https://imgur.com/aTOQgKn sintralin pearled Bewsiej] and handed his pearl to CW as part of the aforementioned deal, but mistakes on coal consumption made him release early, on 22 August. This bunker fiasco resulted in CW officials removing the [[Lexington]] bunker in the city.
In late August, tensions rose in CW when ZeroRussia, CarrieUnderwear, and GeneralWindu raided ThePayman's and Ez2Crew's factory building. At the September elections in Southshire, Saren_Solaris became elected in Southshire, and it eventually became one of the most active cities on the server. It became known for its superior canals than Westminster's, and impressive, frequent, structures. However, during mid-September sintralin contacted the Chancellor of Southshire, StrPlatinum, to offer Southshire secession to Lexington. It was almost accepted, however, with brilliant negotiation from sashimii, possible war was averted.
On 21 September 2017, CW was attacked by Bewsiej, XyngSnow and Posedion. Peter5930 was pearled but eventually got out at the cost of a beacon.
On 24 September 2017, the Battle of the Boeing 911 occurred. It was an important fight as it was the only time the Boeing 911 was actually used for fighting purposes, along with Lexington alts fighting to take it.
On 26 September 2017, [https://www.reddit.com/r/CivCommonwealth/comments/72o7pk/peace_in_our_time/ Brinton seized the throne from Cowguypig] in order to have a more aggressive position in the soon-to-be war against Lexington.
On 27 September 2017, it was discovered that [https://imgur.com/a/GW3oT Saren_Solaris had been in communication with poortea] to cause Southshire to secede from the Commonwealth and start a war. Saren was promptly pearled by CW following it.
On 4 October 2017, Peter5930 discovers an illegal iron farm and reports it to the admins. Lexington repaid the iron but were compensated with 120 compacted stacks of obsidian.
On 8 October 2017, as tensions grew further, Sintralin messages StrPlatinum threatening to treat Southshire the same way as CW if they don't declare neutrality in the war.
The following day, sintralin and Lexington declare war on the Commonwealth, using the breaking of Lexington's bunker in Commonwealth as a casus belli.
