Odresh was a nation on CivClassics, in the +,+ quadrant. It later became a province of Yoahtl.

History

Odresh's claims as of February 2020 (Outdated, see 'Unclaiming of Odresh')

Pre-CivClassics

Devoted

Odresh was originally founded on Devoted 3.0, in Spring 2017, by Crusher6581. It quickly endured a revolution resulting in the creation of the RSFSR, a communist group to the south, who remained hostile for the duration of Devoted. Odresh then annexed the nearby abandoned city of The Templar State of Nova Blyat, which was dubbed 'the Commonwealth' (no relation to CivClassics Commonwealth), and became a state of the United Federation.

Realms

After Devoted shut down, Pcmas12 and Lokilog founded Odresh in Realms. They created a small settlement to the south of their claimed island, and after realizing the existence of a large, abandoned city on the island, Carcosa, they moved their capital there and began to restore the area. It was here that Odresh became friendly with the nation of Hokkaido due to trade.

CivClassics

First Months

When Realms announced that it would be shutting down, the remaining active citizens of Odresh (Lokilog, Crusher6581, Pcmas12, and ZiggyCraft102) agreed to merge with Hokkaido to form the nation of Okashima. When Okashima became inactive, these citizens moved to the +,+ quadrant and established the nation of Odresh. It was quickly discovered that another player, Bennyboo, was planning on building a nearby city, so they created the Sozialstaat Agreement, which incorporated the city into Odresh. They annexed the inactive nation of Batavia and claimed most of the land on their continent up to the borders of Maltovia. Their capital, Odresh city, lies on the edge of the coastal cliffs to the south of the nation. As aspiring members of SATO and the NCA, they quickly began a rail project to connect the city to Vinland.

Auroran Independence

As more people arrived to the city of Sozialstaat, it was revealed that it was built by citizens of Aurora, a nation that dates back to CivCraft. Crusher and Lokilog realized that the city was becoming more Auroran than Odreshi, and during discussions with Bennyboo, they Aurorans announced that they wanted to be independent. From here, independence negotiations began, resulting in the full independence of Aurora. Unlike the situation with the RSFSR, the two nations maintain friendly relations. Lokilog later

Odresh-Phylon Conflict

Main article: Odresh-Phylon Conflict

In December 2018, the first section of the previously mentioned rail to the NCA was completed, going from Odresh City to the nation of Phylon. The F.A.R. at the time, Lokilog, had thought the nation to be inactive, due to it's absence from the claims maps and the fact that many of the city's buildings had been broken into, and so the citizens Odresh voted to annex the island 4-2. A few weeks later, a snitch was discovered on the rail near Phylon's station. Upon breaking it, it was discovered that the snitch was placed by OLivay. He was confronted about the situation, and after declaring Phylon to be an active nation, he quickly restricted the city. A few days later, Lokilog and Crusher went to check if any more snitches had been placed, and after finding none, decided to explore the island. They eventually found their way into the rail station, and from there, Phylon's storage area. The small check had turned into a raid, and so Lokilog and Crusher broke into a few chests and destroyed a few noteblock snitches. After realizing OLivay was online, they left the island with three splash potions of healing. Upon returning to Odresh, they knew that a raid was imminent, and so they dropchested their valuables. Indeed, almost immediately after, five raiders from Phylon showed up, pearling Crusher and logboxing Lokilog in the community center. They alerted their friends in Okashima, who asked for assistance from Vinland. They set out to free Lokilog, but most of them didn't know that Phylon's raid had been justified. Upon reaching Odresh, they broke and logbox and freed Lokilog, who escaped and logged out in the NYC station. Over the next two weeks, a trial was held with Askedar as judge, who sentenced Lokilog and Crusher to two weeks in prison pearl. The only reps sentenced were the three potions, the blocks broken, the reinforcement materials, and the mana costs for the two weeks Lokilog and Crusher would spend in prison pearl.

Return to the Server

After the Odresh-Phylon conflict, Odresh fell inactive, partially because of the opening of CivEx. Five months later, though, in May 2019, Crusher6581 and Lokilog returned to activity. Their first task was to clean up and repair Odresh City, but they soon realized that they could expand and use the Batavian XP and ice farms. As they began to harvest more and more XP resources, Okx from Vinland offered to help them build a simple, single-line rail from Odresh to Vinland. Completed in just two days, a vote was initiated within the NCA to accept Odresh into the alliance, passing on May 13th, 2019. During this time, construction began on a large fortress, drawing inspiration from Okashima's castle in Okato. Later, Odresh annexed the two islands to its north, with plans to set up a nether wart farm. However, this project stalled, as they realized it would too much of a pain to make the journey. The nation then switched it's focus farming XP materials, improving Odresh City, and recruiting new members.

Province of Yoahtl

In September 2019, Odresh joined Yoahtl as a non-autonomous town, meaning that Odresh gives up the freedom to form military alliances and agreements with other nations without Yoahtlan consent in return for mutual defense and close economic and legal integration. Odresh also has the right to secede at any time.

September Raids

From September 20th-24th, Odresh experienced three raids in rapid succession which quickly became known as the September Raids. While no one was pearled, and material loses were minimal, Odresh City's infrastructure was decimated by repeated TNT detonations. The first raid was minor, when Brsxoi entered the city and broke open all houses, stealing whatever valuables remained in the city. After a period of long inactivity, Lokilog logged on soon after and saw this, reported it to Crusher, and then disconnected for the day. On Monday, September 23rd, at approximately 3:51 PM EST, likely alt IkChapDollo repeatedly detonated TNT around the city, wreaking havoc on all structures. While buildings like the Community Center emerged relatively unscathed, places like Crusher Apartments were reduced to crumbling walls. The next day, n8mastercrafter placed major grief around the city, with small pillars of lava and water falling from the tops of buildings, and pumpkins scattered around the city, though they were not reinforced. This was quickly cleaned up, and is best summarized by Lokilog's raid announcement on reddit, in which he said "This one hasn't really changed anything? It just gave us a bunch of pumpkins." By the end of the night, most of the damage to the city from both the 23rd and 24th raids had been cleaned up, with the only major exception being Crusher Apartments. It was intentionally left in this state, as there were talks of turning it into a memorial after the city was rebuilt. The residences of both Lokilog and Crusher were torn down, the first buildings to go in the planned period of demolition and subsequent reconstruction envisioned by Crusher after the Sept. 23rd raid. At this point, the raids had caused players from across Yoahtl to pitch into the effort to help Odresh. After the Sept. 23rd raid, 300 diamond bounties were put on both Brsxoi and IkChapDollo, but now military action was being taken. Tlanexcui was stationed in Odresh, ready to log in and attack if necessary, while progress on an ice road to between Odresh and Yoahtl proper saw great advancement. Furthermore, a massive care package was being put together to help the city recover, while Okato Shipping announced that they would provide free deliveries to Icenia (which had also experienced raids) and Odresh for the rest of the month. Finally, the next day, Crusher and Lokilog successfully pearled the raider as they attempted to place grief in the early morning. This ended the September Raids, and began the period of reconstruction in which most buildings were torn down and replaced. This period of reconstruction ended halfway through completion due to, once more, inactivity.

Reconstruction

After a long period of inactivity, Lokilog and Crusher got together the few old citizens that still wanted to play and began the process of Reconstruction. Originally, they planned for this to occur immediately after the raids, but they went inactive once more, and only the very first steps were ever taken. A new, ordered plan calls for a revival of the province's infrastructure and playerbase in three steps:

  1. Odresh City: The primary goal of phase one is to clean up remaining grief in Odresh City, and to replace old buildings with newer, better-looking ones. This phase also promotes citizens currently living in Batavia or Garnet to build a structure of their own on one of the city's various empty plots.
  2. Batavia + Garnet: The second phase is focused on finishing the Batavian Castle and connecting Garnet to the rest of the province. The castle's second level is still incomplete, and overall it needs some additional aesthetic elements. Meanwhile, Garnet is relatively isolated, so a new branch of the footpaths will be built to serve as the primary connection to other population centers.
  3. Recruitment: Once phases one and two have been completed, the final step in Reconstruction will be to recruit newfriends. Lokilog has stated that he wants to build a solid community in Odresh, and so made recruitment a central goal of reconstruction. In addition, new citizens will solidify the province as an active part of Yoahtl and the server as whole, while ensuring that it will not fall into inactivity as it has so many times before.

A New Capital

In what could be considered the 'exit' phase of Reconstruction, work began on a new city located the desert region to the east. This was partly due to a desire to move the capital city to a settlement other than Odresh City, given its chronic stagnation and poor builds. It was also seen as a sort of revival project, a plan to boost activity, draw in new citizens, and give the province a settlement to show off to the world. In early 2020, Lokilog began testing builds in singleplayer creative worlds, and began construction on CivClassics in mid-February. During this time period, Odresh also purchased Phylon from Adina, a somewhat interesting end point more than a year after the Odresh-Phylon Conflict.

Unclaiming of Odresh

Sometime in 2021, Yoahtl gave up every Odreshi province aside from Odresh City and Phylon the original the claimed area when the nation was first established. They did this because they were giving up unused land to justify claiming land west of New Yoahtl City for farming purposes.

Districts

Entura

Previously known as simply 'the desert', Entura is Odresh's new capital, with a growing city on the eastern coast. Created because of Odresh City's stagnation and poor builds, work on a new capital city began in late February 2020, but was abandonded when Odresh moved to CivRealms. As of CivClassics' end, the city contains a central plaza, surrounded by a canal system and a few buildings.

Batavia

A view of Batavia in December 2019, taken from the nearby cliffs.

Batavia, consisting solely of the tundra biome, was the most developed section of Odresh. Before Odresh was founded, it was populated by the nation of Batavia. In their absence, the land was annexed, leading to a rapid expansion of the farmland for XP production and the construction of a large castle, inspired by the castle on Okato, Okashima. In summer 2019, the original Batavis returned, and a treaty was signed that allowed the Batavis to essentially rule the territory as they pleased, as long as nothing they did conflicted with national laws, and they did not touch the castle or XP farms. Months later, when all members of the NCA had been annexed (Okashima, Vinland, and Odresh joined Yoahtl while Maltovia joined the C.C.C.P.), these farms were more or less unless to Odresh, and so there were no objections when Batavia replaced them with wheat and potato farms. More recently, however, there has been tension over the castle, as there have been multiple incidents of Batavis entering in violation of the treaty. While the debate has yet to escalate anywhere near military conflict, it remains a point of contention.

A civball depiction of the districts of Odresh by Lokilog. The annexed territories of Phylon and Batavia use their respective flags.

Besides the castle, Batavia is home to a medium-sized, European-themed town. As opposed to the simple builds of Odresh City, Batavian structures have fine much finer detail and create a very different environment. Cobblestone towers line the cliffs leading to the ocean, while another more organized town can be found filling in what used to be a bay. On December 16th, 2020, Batavia gained independence and no longer belongs to Odresh.

Odresh City (OC)

Unsurprisingly, the district of Odresh City contains the province's first city (not counting annexed territories) with the same name. OC is a relatively small town with less than 15 structures. However, it contains the only two rails out of Odresh, the underground rail, and the Urbania-OC-Phylon rail, although the latter is of little use (see Phylon Rail for more details). OC is also one of the endpoints of the mountain paths.

Garnet

Garnet is a relatively rural district, named after it's only settlement. The town of Garnet was founded by Big Money in mid-late 2019, and contains only a few structures in a valley. Its only connection to the rest of the nation is through the mountain paths, with were extended to connect to the town in December 2019. The rest of the district is mostly comprised of the valley floor, which remains undeveloped.

Urbania

Urbania is the largest of the six mainland districts, yet has no residents and very little infrastructure. In the southwest of the district is the abandoned city of Urbania. It is unknown who began construction here, but today, there are two unfinished government buildings. Had they been completed, it would be an impressive mark on the land. These days it is a hub for '____ was here' signs. The Urbania-OC-Phylon rail (U-OC-P) has a starting point here.

However, the main feature of the district is the fact that it is more or less a large swath of rugged, mountainous terrain. This mountain biome, with covers most of Odresh, makes travel extremely difficult. As such, other than the aforementioned city, there are no settlements. The only infrastructure here is the mountain path, with provides transportation from the developed west, to the Desert.

The East

The East is the most remote district in the province. No infrastructure connects here, and the terrain is more uneven than even that of Urbania. This area has yet to be explored.

Mountain Paths

Starting soon after the founding of Odresh, work began on a series of pathways to allow quick transportation through the mountains. The first connection was made from Odresh City to Urbania, followed by an extension deep into Urbania. There were talks about connecting to Aurora, but it is unlikely this will ever happen.

Underground Rail

After the Phylon Conflict (see above), the idea of an overland rail to the NCA was abandoned. Instead, a single-line rail was dug as a branch off of an existing underground rail. This is the primary form of transportation to and from Odresh, and allowed the then-nation to be accepted into the NCA.

Urbania-OC-Phylon Rail

Built as the original connection to the NCA, construction stopped after the Phylon Conflict. It runs from Urbania to Phylon, passing Odresh City on the way, but until recently the connection to Phylon was closed. However, a recent agreement with Olivay permits the Odreshi use of Phylonian farms, and so this line has once again become useful.

Politics

Government

Development

When Odresh was founded, it struggled to set up a defined political system. Crusher6581 wanted a monarchy until they had more citizens, while Lokilog pushed for a direct or representative democracy. As the debate flared up and other citizens weighed in, they shifted to two definite positions: Lokilog wanted a direct democracy, while Crusher wanted a representative democracy. Lokilog argued that they didn't have enough people for a representative democracy, and as such, almost everyone would be in a government position. He wanted decisions to be made directly. On the other hand, Crusher believed that a representative democracy was better, because with direct democracy, people who are unaware and not educated in current civpolitics would have control over every decision made. In the end, they voted for an indefinite but temporary direct democracy, and when a certain undecided number of citizens was reached, they would vote once more to determine the permanent system of government. For the nation's leadership, they decided to create the Foreign Affairs Representative, or F.A.R. The job of the F.A.R. was to act that the chief diplomat for the nation, representing it in all negotiations and general appearances on the world stage. In addition, the F.A.R. served as the leader in times of crisis. They could declare a national crisis at any time, allowing them to bypass the legislative process and take action immediately. Of course, there were limitations to this to prevent a dictator from taking charge, but this power was only invoked once, to create a tavel ban to Phylon during the Odresh-Phylon Conflict. Since Odresh's integration with Yoahtl, the positions of F.A.R. and Deputy F.A.R. have been replaced with Governor and Lieutenant Governor, currently occupied by Crusher6581 and Lokilog respectively.

2020 Reforms

In January 2020 a multitude of bills were put forward by Crusher and Lokilog as part of Reconstruction. Crusher introduced a series of bills that formally transferred the powers of the F.A.R. to the Governor, as well as established protocol for elections secession from Yoahtl. Meanwhile, Lokilog proposed a new system in which citizens would have to register to vote before participating in elections or voting on bills. This system would operate similarly to the Mount Augusta system, in which citizens would take a picture of themselves in front of a specified landmark and post it on discord to be verified. This way, inactive citizens would be automatically removed from the pool of eligible voters. This proposal replaced the original idea of an 'inactivity vote' in which citizens would vote to strip a player of their citizenship if they were inactive. However, such a system was deemed to be too slow and tedious, as the entire community would be called on to determine the activity for every citizen in question. These bills were successfully passed in the first few weeks of the year.

International Relations

Adina

Odresh and Adina have a friendly relationship with each other. Crusher has aided them in defense against raiders in the past, and Adina has sold Phylon to Odresh. While no official pact exists, they are generally friends on the international stage.

Okashima

Odresh has a strong relationship with Okashima, in part because all of the founding citizens were Okashiman citizens. Okashima has provided military aid and other assistance, such as with the construction of the NCA rail, over the many months of Odresh's existence, and the two countries participated in unofficial mutual defense before their integration into Yoahtl.

Aurora

Aurora and Odresh maintain friendly relations, a relief for the oldfriends of Odresh who saw the chaos caused by the conflict between the first Odresh and the RSFSR. They have talked about constructing a rail line between their capital cities, and a passage through the mountains already exists.
