"甜菜之鄉" simply known today by the English name, "Beeton", was a fledgling kingdom on the outer reaches of China, a protectorate famous for it's beetroot production. Situated between the Chinese and Korean kingdoms, there was a significant amount of cultural exchange between the two cultures. The inhabitants of Beeton developed a creole language combining the two which is still spoken to this day.
As China began to be dominated by western imperialists in the late 19th century, they weakened their grasp on Beetonese society, which at that point became de-facto independent. The Heavenly Kingdom of Beeton enjoyed almost 60 years of peace and prosperity following their independence, however with the onset of the Great War, Japan expressed their colonial ambitions in the Pacific, leading to a war of subjugation. Beetonese citizens faced the harshest treatment in the history of their nation under Japanese imperial rule. As the Japanese demanded impossible quotas of beetroot to feed their ever-increasing military, citizens were starved and forced to contribute the sum of their cultivation to their new colonial overlords.
The great starvation persisted until the late 1930s, when Beetonese citizens were conscripted en masse to fight in China, and abroad for the Empire. Due to the exceptional performance of Beetonese conscripts, the Empire gave the nation favourable treatment, including massive amounts of funding and support. Beeton continued to prosper until 1943 when the intensity of the war with the Americans had taken its toll on the population. Casualties in battle sky rocketed crippling industry and society at large. However dire the circumstances at home became, Beetonese troops persisted, and served until the very last days of the war. The Empire of Japan had already surrendered, but the Beetonese continued to fight until a week later, when the US dropped an atomic bomb on the capital. The dropping of the third bomb was followed by a joint US-Soviet invasion, and the end of Imperial Rule.
Following the bombing, there was little left of the capital, or the country at large. US and Soviet occupation forces competed to rebuild the country, in hopes of imposing their respective ideologies on the devastated and vulnerable country. Meanwhile, what remained of the Beetonese, disgruntled from centuries of occupation and explotation, began to resent their occupiers, both US, and Soviet. With the help of the People's Republic of China, the Beetonase began a Maoist guerilla campaign against their occupiers, forcing both the Americans and Soviets to withdraw. As the guerillas marched on the newly built cities, they seized factories, and rounded up dissenters, summarily executing or imprisoning them.
Following the revolution, the newly formed Democratic People's Republic of Beeton isolated itself from world affairs. The global community had forgotten about Beeton, and they didn't care, because at last they were at peace. Throughout the years, the DPRB has maintained a closed community, ignoring technological and societal progression of the modern age in favour for traditional practices such as beetroot farming. According to government officials, Beeton is the most scientifically and agriculturally advanced nation on the map, with the highest production of beetroot in the world. The DRPB is also the world leader in athletic achievements with the highest Gold Metals per capita at 2.2.
